The restoration of the c1839 Horrocks Cottage has been a significant achievement following extensive efforts to secure appropriate funding and expert consultation. The Society engaged a qualified heritage architect to conduct a comprehensive inspection and provide detailed recommendations for necessary restoration works, ensuring that the historical integrity of the building was preserved throughout the process.
To meet heritage standards, the Society contracted Olde Style Roofing and Guttering, a reputable firm specializing in heritage roofing. Their work involved maintaining the original shingles beneath the new roofing structure, thereby preserving the building's historical authenticity. The quality of their craftsmanship has been highly commended, and the Society is satisfied with the outcome.
Funding for this project was sourced from multiple channels, including grants, member donations, and Society funds. Despite these efforts, a shortfall remained, which was successfully addressed through support from the South Australian State Government. The Honorable Peter Malinauskas MP, Premier of South Australia, facilitated the acquisition of the remaining funds, demonstrating strong governmental support for heritage conservation initiatives.
On a recent occasion, Tony Piccolo MP, Member for Light, visited the John Horrocks Cottage to present official documentation confirming the grant money required to complete the project. The event was attended by Wendy Spackman, President of the Mt Horrocks Historical Society, along with several committee members and local residents from Penwortham. The gathering marked a significant milestone in the preservation of this historic site, highlighting the collaborative efforts of community stakeholders and government agencies dedicated to heritage conservation.
